The Mississippi Historical Radio and Broadcasting Society

Vol 2 #5 October 25, 1992

News Letter

Our regular monthly meeting was held October 11th, 1992 at the usual place and time. Planning for the Mall show was covered, with decisions being made on the various aspects of displays, manning, transportation, security and logistics.

There will be approximately ten radios on display ranging from 1925 through 1957 -- styles ranging from polished black phenolic front paneled sets to a clam-shell transistor, including bread boxes, cathedral, tombstone, deco plastic, '41 wooden table, military, '49 table and a mid-30's console. There will be a tube display showing tubes from a Brass base & tipped '01A; through nuvistor and miniature high-powered transmitter tubes. Another display will feature service and other literature from Riders, SAMS, original equipment manufs. etc.

At least one radio will be continuously airing old broadcast tapes of Big Band music, '20's, '30's, & '40's commercials as well as war announcements and other news from that era. Club literature will also be displayed and offered to interested visitors.

We hope this will be an opportunity to raise the club's awareness in the community, and to attract new members. Please pass the word to everyone you think may be interested in what we have on display. The display will be at the fountain and will be open from 10AM to 9PM this Friday and Saturday (Oct. 30 & 31) at the Village Fair Mall, Meridian.

Our next regular meeting will be Sunday, November 8 at 2PM at 2412 C St. Meridian.

Other club news: The Alabama Historical Radio Society is starting some educational & training classes to be held in conjunction with their regular meetings. Also, Dave Cisco a series of classes on repairing radios at his shop. The first is scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 31. For more information contact: ALHRS 205-595-2856.

Membership is starting to climb, once again. We've also had a tremendous response to our ads in the Antique Radio Classified about the Mall Show. I didn't try to count all of the calls, but I'm sure there were more than 35 -- most from out of the state. Unfortunately, most were looking for a full blown show / sale / swap-meet. We did take each opportunity to tell them that we would have such a meet the last week of February, or the first week of March 1993.

Speaking of which!!!! Once we get this show over with, it is time to begin working on our spring show. Considering the lead time in advertising, and other time sensitive factors, the show should be cast in concrete no later than the meeting on December 13.
The date: Tentative Feb. 27 or March 6
The location: Tentative JC's Bldg. Hwy 39 North.
The money: Last year the bldg. cost $100 for the day -- we're a bit short of that in the treasury. We need to sell some T-shirts, etc.!!! Last meeting we discussed getting some donations from the community -- If you have any ideas LET'S HEAR THEM!!!

Perhaps someone at The Partnership has some ideas to help us promote the spring show... If the response to this show is any indication, the pull of out-of-town visitors to our spring show should be quite high!
Last year we had excellent help from WTOK, WZMP, and Comcast Cable; and good mentions from WJDQ. We had no reports of mentions at all from WMOX, WOKK, the Meridian Star, WTZH, or WLBM. Apparently, my press releases didn't get any attention at these last media outlets. Sooo--- If anyone want to take a crack at getting their attention -- and getting us some decent media coverage in the process -- PLEASE contact me and let's get something that WILL get their attention this time!!!!

I know after we got home Saturday after last Spring's show, and WTOK did a short deal on it on the 10 o'clock report, we must have gotten some 2 - 3 dozen calls from people "we would have loved to come if only we had known about it!" We had posted some 50 signs in various stores, restaurants, etc. around the Meridian area; It was on the Cable every hour on the half hour; I was on WTOK's Good Morning Meridian as Laurie Davison's guest the Thursday before the show -- Yet few people got the word. We must do better this year!
So again the call is out --- if you can help get the word out -- DO IT!

Other Stuff:
Antique Electronics Supply has issued it's 1993 catalog. Nothing earth shaking -- but some neat stuff, nonetheless.

As I've noted before, tube prices are headed no way but straight up! Average prices on good WD-11's has now reached $40.00 (Duds are fetching $12 - $20!!!). Shortages are getting into some of the early S shape (balloon) types such as '01A's, 45's & 80's -- even the common ST shapes are inching up -- 80 (ST) is running between $6 & $8. An investment you might consider is to purchase some tube boxes. They cost from 8 - 25 cents each depending on size and quantity. That's a small price compared to what some tubes are going for these days. Just tossing them into a box or bag is a real good way to break them. Putting them into tube boxes makes it easier to store, keeps them relatively safe and a LOT easier to find when you need one. Another good investment is tube egg-crates. They come in 15 inch x 15 inch with from 64 to 121 "cells" each depending on the cell size. Priced at around $3 to $4 dollars per set, add a 15 x 15 by 4 or 5 inch deep box, and you have an very safe, efficient way to store those (increasingly) valuable tubes.

That's it for this time. Remember to Vote November 3rd!!!!!!!!
