News Letter

Hard to believe but once again

It's Show Time!!!

The Mississippi Historical Radio and Broadcasting Society's
Spring 1995 Show and Meet

When: March 18, 1995 9AM to 6PM
Where: JayCee's Building, Hwy. 39 N
Who: Everyone is invited!
How Much: Attendees:
Members (and family) free;
$2 per person - $3 per family donation requested from the public.
Sellers fee: $10 per table.
What: Museum & Swap meet all day;
Business meeting at 10 AM;
and an Auction at 12 noon.
Doesn't seem like a year, does it?! But here it is, just over a week away. The following items are firm:

Refreshments:
Randy Corbin will be making Popcorn. We are seeking donations of 2 Liter cokes. (10 or so should do it). Ice is being donated, but we need someone to pick it up (we have the ice chests, just need someone to pick up the ice).

The Museum:
The Mini museum is going to be smaller this year -- only a couple dozen radios. Since the theme is Radio at War - Broadcasting during WWII -- most of the radios will be military and war-time sets. A few "really old" sets will fill in the rest. If anyone has something (radios or related) they want to display -- PLEASE BRING IT! Bill Gerk and myself are bringing just a few sets for display - so any YOU bring will help!

Swap-Meet - Flea Market:
Remember last year - hardly anyone brought radios to sell - and few that were for sale were gone in an hour or so -- so if you want to get rid of some radios--BRING 'EM!!!!

Business Meeting:
We'll hold our annual business meeting at 10AM -- election of officers etc. If you don't like the way things are being run - HERE'S YOUR CHANCE -- Step right up!!!!

Auction:
There are already over 20 radios consigned to the auction, including sets by: Arvin, Channel Master, Crosley, Crown, Delco, Elgin, FADA, General Electric, Magnavox, Motorola, Philco, 1953 Ponitac Chieftain, RCA, Silvertone, Travler, TrueTone and Valiant. Also -- a nearly complete set of Sams PHOTOFACT®s -- sets run from 200 through 1945Êwith a few missing here and there - but all in all a reasonably complete set. This is a rare opportunity -- if you ever wanted to have a few thousand radio and television schematics at your fingertips HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!!!! This set includes several bonuses such as old indexes - PhotoFact of the Month club bonus schematics -- etc. They are in 2 five drawer file cabinets; 1 one drawer cabinet, and several cardboard boxes. They are heavy (estimated 750+ pounds) so keep that in mind.

Preparations Still Needed:
1) we still need a manikin as the operator of the BC-654. The manikin needs to have arms that can be positioned and legs that bends (so it can be seated). Any ideas appreciated.
2) Most of the uniform for the manikin is here - it is a genuine WWII Signal Corps Radioman's shirt, trousers and web belt. We still need Army boots, helmet, and various accessories - Knife in sheath, hand grenades (dummies - not live ones, Corbin!!!!), fake 45 in holster and other similar items.
3) weak minds and strong backs: any volunteers to help move equipment, set up and take down tables, etc. VERY MUCH NEEDED AND APPRECIATED!!!

Sunday, March 12th, will be our last meeting before the show. Attendance has been improving lately, so I hope most of you can make it. There are ALWAYS zillions of little last minute details that need attention - all of your help is appreciated.
On a more somber note regarding a member - Earl Snowden had major surgery a couple of weeks ago - some serious stuff. He is home now, resting - we wish him a speedy recovery.
Back to the show - since there were no entries in any of the contests last year - it has been decided to not have any contest this year. There will be door prizes given out, as we have done in the past. The grand prize is a working old radio.
As mentioned above, the majority of radios in the mini-museum this year will be military and WWII era sets. However a couple of other sets of interest will also be displayed:
Atwater Kent Model 21 sold by Hobgood Plumbing and Electric Co. Meridian, MS sometime around 1925.
We have sent faxes to a couple dozen Radio, television and newspaper outlets advertising the show. However, we need more coverage. We'll have a bunch of flyers to hand out at the meeting Sunday, Hopefully many of you will be able to put them out at stores, and other places people will see them.
We have also posted announcements on CompuServe, and hopefully it will get passed on to the InterNet. I don't have access to the InterNet - if any of you do - it would be great if you could stick a notice up there as well!
That's about it for now.... try and make the meeting Sunday --- if not, hope to see EVERYONE the 18th!!!!
